so. there is blood type A , blood type B, blood type AB, and Blood type O. however, there is a couple ways to represent each type as a genotype.

why is blood type AB considered the universal receiver and why is blood type O considered the universal donor??

Blood type AB is considered the universal receiver because individuals who have blood type AB does not have the antibodies. They do not have the anti-A or Anti-B antibodies. They can receive all types of blood types: A,B,O,AB .

Blood type O considered the universal donor since individuals do not have either A or B antigens on the surface of their RBCs, but their blood serum contains IgM anti-A antibodies and anti-B antibodies against the A and B blood group antigens. Therefore, a group O individual can receive blood only from a group O individual, but can donate blood to individuals of any ABO blood group (ie A, B, O or AB).
