Question 18: 5 Question 19: -4 Question 20: -17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

All wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@NatalieLove ques18 - mod(-7-3+1) = -mod (-10+1) = - mod(-9) as modulus of a number is always positive therefore - 9 would be an answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@NatalieLove try to solve 19 and 20 write the full solution here {whatever u r getting} so that ur mistakes can be rectified

- | -7 - 3 + 1 | A negative minus anything is basically just adding the two numbers together and keeping the answer negative. - | -10 + 1 | A negative plus anything is basically just subtracting it. - | -9 | Absolute value signs take away the negative sign inside, leaving the other outside of it. -9 3 - | 2 - 8 + 1 | Two minus eight is negative six. 3 - | -6 + 1 | Negative six plus one is negative five. 3 - | -5 | The absolute value signs cancel out the negative inside, so it's left with three minus five. 3 - 5 Three minus five is negative two. -2 Do the stuff inside the absolute value brackets first. -2 | -4 - 5 | - | 4 - 10 | Negative four minus five is negative nine. Four minus ten is negative six. -2 | -9 | - | -6 | The absolute value brackets cancel out the negative with the nine and six, leaving them positive. You put a plus sign in front of the nine because it is positive. The reason you don't change the minus sign into a plus sign with the six is because there was already a subtraction sign there. -2 + 9 - 6 Negative two plus nine is seven. 7 - 6 Seven minus six is one. 1

I get confused with the lines in between

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In mine?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no in other problems similar to the ones u did

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The | | ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so I do the does first is like parenthesis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, what it means is, once you solve everything inside those(I call them absolute value brackets), no matter what you got, even if it's a negative, the absolute value brackets always makes the number positive. And yeah, you do what's inside the absolute value brackets first, like parenthesis.

alright got it Thank You

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep. You're welcome.
