what is atp and why is it important

OpenStudy (koikkara):

well...the ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate. It is a molecule found in the cells of living organisms. It is said to be very important because it transports the energy necessary for all cellular metabolic activities. It is dubbed as the universal unit of energy for living organisms. Without ATP, various metabolic activities in the human body cannot take place....

OpenStudy (agreene):

Just to clarify what @Koikkara said, which is almost 100% accurate... ATP (and GTP, UTP, etc) don't transport energy, but rather are broken down... ATP->ADP, etc to create energy for the cell.

OpenStudy (koikkara):

@agreene ....thanks for the valuable correction...

Adenosine Tri Phosphate or ATP is the source of energy for your cells. This is what your cells use as energy. It is made in the mitochondria through the process of Glycolosis (Breaks down Glucose into Pyruvates and then into Acetyl CoA (after the additon of a vitamin A molecule these two molecules then enter the Krebs Cycle which yields ATP, carbon dioxide and transfers the Hydrogen (Energy molecule) in NADH, which then is taken into the Electron Transport Chain that uses the NADH and does active transport to make a HYDROGEN GRADIENT because HYDROGEN IS ENERGY and then the Hydrogen atoms are attracted to the final electron acceptor which is OXYGEN. That is why we need to breathe, but aside from all this BLAH BLAH BLAH, the important part is that ATP is energy, and it is the biological form in which your cells can recieve ENERGY. since we need energy to make any process remember that we are INVESTING ATP INTO MAKING MORE ATP so that also make it important. WE ARE ACTUALLY YIELDING ATP at the end of our PROCESS.
