Whats going on here?! Please watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nu3Y_jyeTyY at 1:28(Before that just shows what happens when a magnet passes through a copper pipe)

OpenStudy (oneowone):

Why is the magnet pushed down when it passes through the aluminum ring? What do you think happens to the magnet before and after passing the aluminum ring? I feel that it accelerates after passing through it.

its because uberhaxornova and pewdiepie just collabababed

well.... its inducing current in that aluminium ring also.. again use lens law as the magnet approaches it.. the current induced is in such a way that it tries to oppose it.. so it produces field in the opposite direction and hence the ring moves down... and when the magnet is receding and hence produces fields in the same direction.. so it again moves down.. thats how the magnet PUSHES the ring DOWN as it passes through it.. then cause of the restoring force the ring oscillates so obviously the magnet will decelerate as it approaches the ring.. and reach another terminal velocity.. but as the ring is not thick enough.. as the magnet recedes the influence of the ring vanishes, and the magnet accelerates back to reach its initial terminal velocity .. thts my guess :P
