Have another quadratic equation I need help with, I am getting the numbers to plug in but I am having problem when I simplify? So far I have: x = [– b ± √(b² – 4ac)] / 2a in this case: a = 4 , b = -5 , c = -4

here is the formula: y=4x^2-5x-4

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Okay so 5 ± √((-5²) - 4(4)(-4)) all over 2(4) so 5 ± √((25 + 64)) all over 8 5 ± √(89) all over 8 So to get the 2 answers we do 5 + √(89) all over 8 which i get 1.804247642 and 5 - √(89) all over 8 which i get -.5542476415

If I were looking for an x-intercept on a graph would there be one with this equation or is there no x intercept

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Thats exactly what we just solved for...what we just did was find the ZEROS of the equation...meaning...where y = 0... and when y=0 ...thats an x-intercept...so both of those answers are x-intercepts

Thats what I thought. Just wanted to clarify. thanks

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Yeah no problem :)
