In a large bag of 100 Skittles®, each of the 5 colors (red, orange, yellow, blue, green) occurs with the same probability. You reach in and select 2 candies. Find the probability that exactly 1 of the candies is green.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you pull them out at the same time?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2/5 in this case i believe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

becasue each color has a probability of being pulled out at 1/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you are pulling out 2 then it would be 1/5 + 1/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats what i thought. but im doing an algebra class online and i put in 0.4 because thats 2 divided by 5. and it said the correct answer is 0.32. why is that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh crap your right. because you have to take out the chace that they are both green

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i actually have to go for about 15 mins ill check back but it a set rule. (A or B) = A + B - (A and B)
