Lamarck noticed that giraffes used their extremely long necks to reach the leaves high up on acacia trees, which other animals could not reach, giving them a food source for which they had few competitors. In developing his theory about natural selection, what did Lamarck infer from this observation?
All giraffes were born with short necks, but eating acacia leaves would cause them to stretch over a lifetime. The first giraffe to evolve had a long neck and passed the trait to its offspring with no further change in the species since. Only the giraffes with the longest necks would survive and be able to produce offspring.
Lamark, at opposite to Darwin advocated for transmission of acquired traits.
but would be the answer from the multiple choice explain please!!
The crucial point of Lamark theory is that one individual would change (acquired trait) and would transmit the acquired trait to offspring.
Let me repeat what Ataly explained for you, in different words. Lamarck believed in two things. I'll explain them really quickly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. USE and DISUSE This was the idea that an organism's body could change, dramatically, depending on how it used its body. For example, if a giraffe has a short neck, its neck could grow to be very long, if it stretched its neck a lot. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. SOFT INHERITANCE This is the idea that parents can pass the ways that their bodies changed... onto their own children. For example, if I work out a lot, and develop a very muscular right arm, then my children would be born with very muscular right arms, because I have one, myself. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Those are the two things that Lamarck believed. Now, if we're talking about giraffes, what I understand is that Lamarck believed that all giraffes were born with SHORT necks. But since they had to stretch their necks high up, to get food, their necks got longer and longer. And when they had children, their children were born with long necks, because their parents developed long necks. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Of course, a big part of Lamarck's theories has been rejected and disproved. But the answer to your question is still based on what Lamarck believed.
I'm gonna attach a picture that might help you understand better.
