Solve: –2(x – 3) ≥ 5 – (x + 3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My answer is –2(x – 3) ≥ 5 – (x + 3) -2x – 6 > 5x + 15 - 5x - 5x -7 – 6 > + 15 + 6 + 6 -7 > 21 x < -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

on your first step, when you distributed the -2 it would make the 6 positive, not negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and on the other side, there is a subtraction sign between so you dont distribute

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what do I do to the other side?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would look like this

|dw:1363271569278:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

–2(x – 3) ≥ 5 – (x + 3) -2x+6>=5-x-3 -2x+6 >=2 - x how will I subtract 6 from x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1363271997861:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now I divide 4 by 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i would add the x so it would be -x-4>=0 then just add 4 -x>=4 and divide by a negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

–2(x – 3) ≥ 5 – (x + 3) -2x+6>=5-x-3 -2x+6 >=2 - x -2x+6>=2-x -2x-4>=-x -x-4>=0 -x>=4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you got it!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and to check if its right I replace x with 4? –2(4 – 3) ≥ 5 – (4 + 3) -8 - 6 > 5 - 7 -2 -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, you would have to make sure you divide the -x>=4 by a negative because x needs to be alone so it would be x=<-4, so you would plug back in -4 and/pr a number less than to see if it works!
