can any one in Spanish 1 help with basic stem-change-verbs? I know that all forms change except nosotros and vosotros. I need to change the verbs canta, estar, beber, ser, compartir, hacer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

None of the words on that list are stem changing verbs, actually. There IS one IRREGULAR verb: SER.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you like, I can show you how to conjugate all verbs, in general. I could also give you an actual example of a stem changing verb.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my teacher gave us this chart to fill out that is all I know she is very bad about not explaining things

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You wanna know what a stem changing verb is? When we conjugate stem-changing verbs, the MIDDLE part of the verb gets changed. ~~~~~~~~~~ One example of a stem-changing verb is..."ENTENDER." (to understand) Here, take a look at all the forms of "entender." (Yo) ENTIENDO (Tú) ENTIENDES (Él/Ella/Usted) ENTIENDE (Nosotros) ENTENDEMOS (Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes) ENTIENDEN You see how when we conjugate the verb, the MIDDLE of the verb changes from an (E) to an (IE) ? That's why it's a stem changing verb. The middle part changes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks I think I got it. The Light bulb just went off. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep. Another example of a stem-changing verb would be PIENSO (to think/to plan). ~~~~~~~~~ But let's step back. Do you know how to conjugate all those verbs on your list? Cantar...estar...beber...ser...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry. I meant to say PENSAR. PIENSO is the YO form of Pensar.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know you change like ar, er, ie I think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes that's right. The endings would all change. We would first take OFF the ending. And then add a NEW ending. Would you know how to conjugate "cantar"? If not, what I can do is run through conjugation with you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

canter

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright. How about I go through it with you? Step by step. ~~~~~~~~~~ Step 1. NOTICE that "cantar" ends with the letters (AR). That means it is an AR verb. And almost ALL (AR) verbs conjugate pretty much the same way. Take off the last two letters of the verb. So....CANTAR becomes CANT-- ~~~~~~~~~~~ Step 2. We add on a new ending, depending on what we want the verb to mean. Here are all the different forms of "cantar." (Yo) CANTO --- I sing (Tú) CANTAS --- You sing (Él/Ella/Usted) CANTA --- He/She sings (Nosotros) CANTAMOS --- We sing (Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes) CANTAN --- They sing So you see, the new endings that we can add are.... O AS A AMOS AN And whichever ending we choose all depends on what we want to say. For example, CANTO means "I sing." And CANTAS means "you sing." ~~~~~~~~~~ That's all we have to do to conjugate most (AR) verbs. Easy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh so with Estar yo-esto tu-estas el,ella,usted-esta nosotros- estamos vosotros- estais ustedes,ellos,ellas-estan

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes! Except for one thing: (Yo) ESTOY The YO form is irregular, for some verbs.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay Thanks I think I got it now. When I get done filling out a chart for my notes could you check them for me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right. Yes, I can do that. One thing though. Some of the verbs on your chart aren't (AR) verbs. Some are (ER). And there's one irregular verb: SER. Do you think you know how to conjugate those?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will give it a try thanks :)
