When graphing rational functions, why is x=0 the vertical asymptote and y=0 the horizontal asymptote? What is the point of these asymptotes? What happens when you plot points on the asymptotes?

Rational functions are always 1 over something. If you put 1 over 0, you get undefined. Those are the asymptotes simply because of the problems with dividing by zero.
