OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the area of this shaded portion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (compassionate):

3.56 x 16 - 3.14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

53.82? is not one of my options though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First you must find the area of the square. This will be \[16^2\]. Then subtract from this the area of the circle which is \[\pi r^2\]. The diameter of the circle is the same as the height of the square

OpenStudy (compassionate):

You want to find the perimeter by 4a then subtract 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

...I don't think you need the perimeter

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 16*16 is 256. and then what's next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats the area of the square. Now subtract the area of the circle i.e \[3.14\times r^2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats the area of the circle ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[3.14 \times r^2\]! :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

803.84 !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no that is the diameter you have used! The radius is half the diameter :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, so its 401.92

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It should be half of that. You have multiplied it by 2 somewhere

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3.14 x 8^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

200.96

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats it. Now if you subtract the area of the circle from the area of the square you'll be left with the part inside the square but not inside the circle. Thats the shaded bit :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so 200.96 is the area of the circle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the area of the square is 256 ? right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it must be D right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah D is the correct answer :)
