Ernest Hemingway's writing style mirrored the rules he learned at the Kansas City Star. "where he prepped for Princeton, and played a very good end on the football team" and "hardened into a rather unattractive mould" are examples of: a. using vigorous English b. use of slang c. elimination of superfluous words

At first I was going to say (a), but Hemingway, while vigorous in his authorial voice and general manliness, is never one to write in a way that demanded a vigorous understanding of the English language from his reader. In fact, he is always to the point, as is shown in those two quotes. My answer would be (c). Pertaining to to superfluous words, Twain wrote, “Substitute 'damn' every time you're inclined to write 'very;' your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.”
