Let f(x) = x2 – 2x + 2 and g(x) = x – 3. Find f(x) • g(x).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer choices: x3 – 6x2 + 12x – 6 x3 – 5x2 + 8x – 6 x3 – 3x2 + 6x – 6 x3 – 2x2 + 5x – 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^2(x^3-2x^2+2x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that right??

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

no you would multiply the whole trinomial just by the x...dont multiply that x by x so x times x2? x times -2x? x times 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay lol i see what i did wrong, i'm dumbb go on..

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

after you do that do the same thing with -3

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

lol no go ahead @Mertsj haha you were the original cook....i just wanted to clarify the mistake up there before :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry guys, you both lost me :( im confused

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

okay...so when you multiply anytype of trinomial, binomial, quadnomial so be it you take the first term (in this case "x") and you multiply it by EVERY term in the other parenthesis so you have f(x) = (x2 – 2x + 2) and g(x) = (x – 3) write it like this (x-3)(x² - 2x + 2) now take your first term in the first parenthesis...."x"....and multiply it by EVERY term in the second parenthesis...so what is x times x²? what is x times -2x? what is x times 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^3 -2x^2 2x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or would the 2nd one be -1x?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

no you have it right :) x times -2x would indeed be -2x²

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

so you have that part.....now...what you JUST did with "x"....do it with -3***the second term in your first parenthesis**** so multiply that by every term in the second parenthesis what is -3 times x²? what is -3 times -2x? what is -3 times 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3x^2 -6x -6

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

close...what is -3 times -2x? **negative times negative***

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh a positive, 6x

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

there you go :) so altogether....you have x^3 -2x^2 +2x ****what you got from doing the x**** and -3x^2 -6x -6 ****what you got from doing the -3*** so you have x^3 -2x^2 +2x -3x^2 -6x -6 combine all your like terms...and what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Answer A x3 – 6x2 + 12x – 6

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

like terms "any numbers that have the same variable and exponent" a.k.a.. you can ONLY combine x^3 with another number with x^3 you can only combine x^2 with another number with x^2....and so on and so forth.....so try that 1 more time -2x² - 3x²? 2x - 6x?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

and sorry typo up there...should be +6x

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

x^3 -2x^2 +2x -3x^2 +6x - 6 is what it should be

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

so x^3 has no other ^3 numbers to combine with right? so it stays the same

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

-2x² has another x² number to combine with right? -2x² - 3x² is?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

2x has another x number to combine with too right? 2x + 6x is?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

and finally, that -6...has no other numbers to combine with right? so that stays the same too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you i see what you did :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you i see what you did :)

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

:) so your answer would be?
