How does the release of histamine by white blood cells cause inflammation on an open wound? Histamine is responsible for allergic reactions. Histamine is composed of small sticky particles that circulate in the blood and allow it to form blood clots when bleeding. Histamine dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow to the area, which causes redness and swelling. Histamine coats all of the cells within the body and is responsible for giving them nutrients and oxygen and moving waste from the bloodstream and other tissues when injured.
