Help plzz...might seem long but pretty easy for some ppl out there!!! ill might help u 2. Jerrys snack wagon sereves combination sandwiches. Each type of sandwhich consists of 2 diff. types of sandwiches can be made using 2 diff. types of meat from the list? Choices of meat: 1) roast beef 2) turkey 3) corned beef 4) pastrami 5) Ham

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

What's your question? How many types of sandwiches can be made?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u guys tell me in tree diagram form if possible...thank u!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

well you have 5 choices for the first slot 4 choices for the second slot (assuming repeats aren't allowed) giving you 5*4 = 20 choices total, but since order doesn't matter, you really have 20/2 = 10 different types of sandwiches

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um y do u hve to divide

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

because having choice 1 and choice 2 is the same as having choice 2 and choice 1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the order of the meat doesn't matter, so you have to divide by 2 to avoid double counting

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nd u got the 4 from taking out 1 type of meat, rite?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes, this is assuming that once you choose the first type of meat, you can't choose it again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, thanks but im confused in how to put the data in a tree diagram.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u help me with tht, plz?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You would draw 5 branches starting from a common node to represent the 5 choices of meat Then from each branch, you draw 4 more branches to represent the 4 left over choices (after picking that first choice) A blank tree of this form is attached. You'll have to label each branch, but that's not that tough to do.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Keep in mind that some of the branch combos will overlap, so this tree is useful if order mattered since order does not matter, you'll have to exclude the overlapping branches

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank u so much for ur helpy delipy mathematically

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Here's what the tree would look like if ordered mattered and you labeled it Ex: the number 3 stands for choice 3 (which is corned beef)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Now here's what that same tree would look like, but you have removed repeated and over-counted branches Ex: branch 1-2 is the same as branch 2-1, so remove branch 2-1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So you'll see that the branch count goes from 20 to 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok, thts wht i was thinking also. thank you, ur very genorous and smart

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

np

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but isnt each part has to hve the equal # of branches

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what do you mean

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in the tree diagram..

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes what about it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in tree. diagram #3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok yes, whats your question about tree diagram #3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there are 4 parts but isnsupposed to be 5, since there r 5 diff. types of meats. Also there are supposed to hve the equal amnt. of branches in each part, but there isnt. However, tree diagram #2 is right bec. there is the same amnt of brances distributed equally

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so can i just rite tht i divided by 2 and got 10 after righting the second diagram

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no tree 3 is the final answer because look at this picture you'll see that the red branch 1-4 is the same as the blue branch 4-1 order does NOT matter so that's why I tossed out branch 4-1 (and any other duplicate branches)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so you start with tree #2, then you trim off the duplicate branches to get tree #3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the second level has 4 parts (NOT 5) since once you pick the first type of meat, you can't select it again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok so u cross out the ones tht are the same but like they r flipped. so then as a result it comes out to 10 sandwhiches rite.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

exactly, in tree #2, you'll see that there are 10 branches this means that there are 10 different sandwiches total

OpenStudy (anonymous):

finally, phew. ok. sorry for the trouble. Thanxx

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

its ok, it's good you asked
