1. Write the balanced equation for the reaction of acetic acid (CH3COOH ) and sodium bicarbonate(NaHCO3 ).

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Start by making two lists - one for product one for reactant side. This is to keep track of each element on both the sides. Remember that a balanced equation has the same number on both sides. You can't have a reaction and an uneven number (what goes in must also come back out). Note, remember that to balance, it follows the distributive property. That means, if you have for example, 2NaH what that actually means is 2 Na and 2 H's. Also, CO2. If you put 2CO2 you have 2 carbons and 4 oxygens. Typically when you're learning to balance, you're doing basic ionic reactions, which means + and - charges. For this, you have acetic acid, which is actually CH3COO - and H+ same with sodium bicarbonate. Na+ and HCO3- I'll let you try the product yourself. But that's about it. Remember to BALANCE after you form the product.
