Simplify the following expression. a + c − 4b − c + a − b

In math, "simplify" usually means to solve a problem, and when you use variables, it means to try and have as little parts to the expression as possible. So, if you can't quite see the different variables, you can begin by rearranging them. So, your expression will become "a + a + c - c - 4b -b" Then, once you've completed that step, you combine like terms. Add both the A's to make the beginning "2a" Then, your C's cancel each other out, so you don't need to worry about that. Finally, you subtract "b" from "-4b", giving you "-5b" Rewrite in an expression. So, "2a - 5b".
