Can you explain me what is the "sustem reduced mass" ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

system* sorry

OpenStudy (cj7529):

the reduced mass of a system is kind of like the combined mass. It is the effective mass inertial mass of a 2 body system. For example, two planets orbiting one and other, you cant consider one being stationary, the two bodies orbit around a common center, so the reduced mass comes into play when you take this into acount

I didn't really understand the difference between reduced mass and combined mass...

OpenStudy (kropot72):

There is a good explanation at the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reduced_mass
