Use half angle identities to find exact value: tan Ө

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ө=22.5 degrees

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Hero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got sin and cosӨ, just stuck on tanӨ :O

hero (hero):

I'm kinda busy. Ask @hartnn

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@everyone!

OpenStudy (aravindg):

hint 22.5*2 = 45

OpenStudy (aravindg):

now use tan 2 theta formula :)

OpenStudy (aravindg):

\[\large \tan 2 \theta=\dfrac{2\tan \theta}{1+\tan^2 \theta}\]

OpenStudy (aravindg):

you will get a quadratic in tan theta

OpenStudy (aravindg):

oops its 1-tan^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isn't that double angle formula ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i want half angle :P

OpenStudy (aravindg):

I think this is enough ..you get a quadratic

hero (hero):

I agree. There should be an @everyone ping

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm but i want to see it in half angle!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well..more like i need to see it in half angle lol

OpenStudy (aravindg):

theta =2ttheta/2

OpenStudy (aravindg):

infact I applied half angle here took 22.5 as half angle for 45

hartnn (hartnn):

\(\large \tan \theta=\dfrac{2\tan (\theta/2)}{1+\tan^2 (\theta/2)}\)

OpenStudy (aravindg):

1-tan^2 theta/2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on..this is not the way i learn in class :|

hartnn (hartnn):

yeah, 1- ...

OpenStudy (aravindg):

:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about cos or sin ?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

you can use formula for cos 2 theta and sin 2 theta similarly

OpenStudy (aravindg):

infact once you get any of the above you can use tan theta to get value of other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then divide by 2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use formula for cos2theta and sin2theta and divide by 2 ? to get half angle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sin2θ = 2cosθsinθ

OpenStudy (aravindg):

oops i think i made a mistake on that

OpenStudy (aravindg):

use this then 1+cos 2 theta =2cos ^2 theta

OpenStudy (aravindg):

here 2 theta =45

OpenStudy (aravindg):

theta =2.5

OpenStudy (aravindg):

*22.5
