can someone explain to me what is the difference between combinations and permutations?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

the order dosent matter in combinations, it does in permutations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a permutations is an ordered combination

kk thx :)

In addition to UnkleRhaukus...here are some examples: Permutations-When order matters: In how many ways can horses in a 10 horse race finish first, second, third =10P3 Combination-When order doesnt matter: how many simple random samples of size 4 can be taken from a population of size 20.=20C4

Hope that helps...

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Also n C r = combination n P r = permutation and you can connect the two by this formula n C r = (n P r)/( r! ) which can be rewritten as n P r = ( r! ) * (n C r)

im familiar with the formula but it's which one to use :/ but yea i understand thx!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

most of the simple random sample questions should be combinations (according to my teacher, lol)...and again if it talks about order permutations (like the race one) , if not..combination

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thx :)
