OpenStudy (gabylovesyou):

how do I tell when an equation is a quadratic equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If the highest power in the equation is a 2, you have a quadratic equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and it does not have any fraction as an exponent for any variable

OpenStudy (gabylovesyou):

the highest power or the highest power added together

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[ax^2 + bx + c = 0\] This is the general form of a quadratic equation. As long as the highest power in the equation is a 2, and all powers are integers (as bjesquijo pointed out), it's a quadratic.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

fractions are fine for equations

OpenStudy (amistre64):

lol, i misread "exponent" as coefficient ...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

\[au+b\sqrt{u}+c\]this is still quadratic - ish

OpenStudy (gabylovesyou):

Which equation is a quadratic equation? 5x − 2 = y NOT THE ANSWER y + 15x^2 = (3x − 2)(5x + 7) y = 3x(5 − x) + 7 NOT THE ANSWER y + 2 = (3x^2 + 10)(x − 1)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

might be good to distinguish between a polnomial (only integer exponents) and an equation (highest degree term)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

one of yout "not the answers" is a quadratic

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@amistre64 I guess you could substitute u = √x to make it a "normal" quadratic.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i see a cubic, 2 linears, and a quadratic

OpenStudy (gabylovesyou):

C is a quadratic ?
