In what way did Abraham Lincoln's election lead to the beginning of the Civil War? Lincoln demanded more federal power than Southern states were used to. Lincoln's election united the nation's legislature against slavery and the South. Lincoln was considered an abolitionist and Southerners feared his election would end slavery. In his campaign, Lincoln had made it clear he would attack the South if slavery was not abolished.
