well, catalysts speed up chemical reactions by reducing the amount of energy required for the reaction to occur. They are not consumed in the process, so can do this many times.

or more detailed: they work by providing an alternative reaction pathway for the breaking and remaking of bonds. The activation energy for this new pathway is often less than the activation energy of the normal pathway
