Compare the solubility and melting points of Ethane, Ethanol and Ethanoic acid. Explain.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1. ethane only has covalent bonds, there is a very low strength between them. Ethane is only soluble in non-polar compounds. 2. ethanol has an -OH group that can form hydrogen bonds with other molecules of ethanol and that makes ethanol to have a higher melting point than ethane. Ethanol is soluble in polar compounds because it has the -OH group. 3.acetic acid has two polar groups one -OH and a doble oxygen bond. Just like ethanol, acetic acid can form hydrogen bonds, but this bonds are stronger than the ones of ethanol due to the presence of one -OH and two oxygens. Is soluble in polar compounds.
