Identify whether the following statement is inductive or deductive reasoning: You are told a sequence of numbers follows the rule that the next term is the product of the two previous terms. The first few numbers in the sequence are -1, 2, -2…. You conclude that the next number must be -4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

inductive means "it's most probably ..." deductive means "it must be..."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

inductive goes from the particular to general deductive goes from the general tp the particular so its inductive

I think it's deductive

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

whenever you're using an explicit rule or stated fact to derive some other fact, you're using deductive reasoning

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If you were just given the sequence -1, 2, -2 and had no explicit rule for generating terms, then you might guess that the next term is -4 but you could also guess the next term is 3 since it also appears that the sequence is -1, 2, -2, 3, -3, 4, -4, 5, -5, ...etc if you were making this guess, then you would be using inductive reasoning
