Are enzymes functional in non living cells?
In principal Yes. An enzyme is nothing more than a simple chemical that work under specific conditions , but may require some post-translational modifications.
Hey Frostbite can u send me some reference ?
Sure.
Just need to get my right PC so I can enter the my publishing catalog.
Familiar with the biochemist Eduard Buchner?
no
can't enter my catalog but I can give you this: http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/chemistry/laureates/1907/buchner-lecture.pdf
It is his noble lecture... he got a noble prize for doing a fermentation using non-living cells
Thanks.... reading it.
Another interesting article I like to mention which is why I say "chemical" is the ribonuclease refolding experiment done by Chris Anfinsen... He earned the noble prize in chemistry for showing that the sequence alone determines the native conformation - just like any other chemical.
