well, for example, look at the original function, f(x) = x^2 +5 say you take x to equal 2, just for this example. f(x) would then equal 2^2 + 5, or 9 now say x = 2 and you add 1 to it (the 1 represents h). You would have f(x) = (2+1)^2 + 5, which you could say is (2+1)*(2+1) +5, which is (2^2 + 2*(2*1) + 1^2) + 5
