OpenStudy (waheguru):

6x^2-12x^2-4y+2y^2 factored becomes -2(3x^2+y)(y-2) but I do not understand that because when I factor this i get (y-2)(6x^2+2y) can anyone help me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\(6x^2 - 12x^2\) = ??

OpenStudy (waheguru):

When I solve this I simply get (y-2)(6x^2+2y) Can this be factored further

OpenStudy (waheguru):

These are expressions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you sure there is -2??

OpenStudy (waheguru):

This is what I get online, can you explain how to get to this http://www.mathway.com/answer.aspx?p=calg?p=6xSMB072-12xSMB072-4y+2ySMB072?p=78?p=?p=?p=?p=?p=0?p=?p=0?p=?p=?p=Factor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey Man, my net is slow.. Just tell me -2 in front is that right??

OpenStudy (waheguru):

yea

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If it is +2 instead of -2, then you are right in the calculations, you are just making mistake of Minus somewhere, check it again..

OpenStudy (waheguru):

ok thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you tell me what way you have factorized it??

OpenStudy (waheguru):

Factoring by Grouping

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\(2y^2 - 4y - 6x^2\) How will you do by Grouping??

OpenStudy (waheguru):

Im note sure, I need to check my notes, basically we use factoy by grouping when there are no commoin factors between the terms so we put together any 2 terms that have some common fator and factor them seperatly from the whole exptressin

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you tell me what was your actual question??

OpenStudy (waheguru):

Factoring this 6x^2-12x^2-4y+2y^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, you will get: \(2y(y + 3x^2) - 4(y + 3x^2)\) \(\implies (2y - 4)(y + 3x^2) \) \(\implies 2(y - 2)(y + 3x^2)\) Is this you getting??

OpenStudy (waheguru):

yea

OpenStudy (waheguru):

can this be factored any further?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you want that answer the link is showing??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are right in actual, the link is showing just the half answer or less than that..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

See in the link, they have just done this: -12x^2 + 6x^2 = -6x^2 this you know: So you are left with: \[-6x^2 - 4y + 2y^2\] Just factor out -2 here and you will get that answer..

OpenStudy (waheguru):

Thankyou very much

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are welcome dear..
