Find the discount on a skirt that is regularly priced at $50 and is on sale for $40.

If you take 50 percent and x it by 20% which is 0.2 it would be 10 dollars so it would be a 20% discount so take your 10 dollars and minus it from 50 to get 40

taybay111 pretty much explained it, but let me it another way. In general to find discount in percentage, D, of reduced price P2 from original price P1: \[D = \frac{P_1 - P_2}{P_1} \times 100\% \]
