Galaxies Perhaps late at night, you’ve looked up into the sky to count the stars. Maybe you’ve watched to find your favorite constellation, like the Big Dipper. The stars you see, as well as the planets, the sun, and other space dust, are all part of our galaxy, the Milky Way. A galaxy is a massive region in space that is composed of stars, planets, and space debris. There are approximately fifty billion galaxies, of which the Milky Way is one. Galaxies have a center, on which the rest of the galaxy rotates, as if on an axis. The existence of galaxies was discovered by an American astronomer, Edwin Powell Hubble, in 1924. Galaxies exist in several different shapes. Some are spiral-shaped, like the Milky Way. Spiral-shaped galaxies have a dense center with arms spiraling out from the center, like the tentacles of an octopus. There are also elliptical galaxies, which contain mostly old stars. Finally, there are galaxies which have an irregular shape. These galaxies originally had a different shape, but when new stars form, they offset the shape of the galaxy. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is a spiral-shaped galaxy, within a group of galaxies referred to as the Local Group. There are billions of stars in the Milky Way, and perhaps even a black hole. There are four different arms branching off of the Milky Way galaxy. We live in one arm of the galaxy called the Orion.
