In what way did President Grant's approach to Reconstruction differ from that of President Johnson?

President Johnson let a lot of Confederates off the hook. He also didn't exactly stand up for African American rights, for instance, the black codes were passed during his administration. (Very very racist codes.) Grant also believed in peaceful reconciliation of the North and South, so he was pretty forgiving of the Confederates as well, but he worked to promote the civil rights of African Americans. For instance, he passed laws that attempted to limit the actions of hate groups like the Ku Klux Klan. Does that make sense?
