Bond energies of multiple bonds are higher than those of single bond but double bond is not twice as strong as single bond...why?

this is because single bonds have sigma bonds which r very strong and difficult to break... but double bonds consist of a strong sigma bond and a weak pi bond which can be easily broken...

because sigma bonds (single bonds) have greater orbital overlap (on internuclear axis), while pi bonds (double, triple) have less overlap (above and below the internuclear axis)
