20 to 17

lessanchez, do you think you could clarify on that a little bit? What do you want to figure out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

help me with this problem Fifteen of 50 students surveyed said that they favored country music. What percent of the students favored country music?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You put 15 over 50 and convert that into percentage.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also if you noticed it, 10% of 50 is 5, so 30% of 50 is just 3*5, 15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Percentages have a lot of shortcuts, and noticing them will help you get the answers really quickly.

thnxz

Find 80% of 25.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I want you to try this one with just a nudge from me. If 10% of 25 is 2.5, how do we get to 80%?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think about it, if 10% is 2.5, to get to 80% we multiply by 8. So now what do you think it is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

20 percent i think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not "percent", but the answer is 20. You could have also done it backwards, and figured out the difference between 80% and 100%, since we know that 100% is equal to 25. The difference in percent is 20%, and 10% we know is equal to 2.5, so 2 times that is 5. 25-5=20, which is the same as what you got, but with smaller numbers.

A baseball bat is on sale for $40.00. It has been discounted at 75%. What was the original price of the bat?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We now have the opposite information, so we want to work backwards. 75% is equal to 40, and we need 25% more to reach the full number. That 25% is also equal to 1/3 of 40, because 25/75=1/3. So to find the full number, we need to find 1/3 of 40, and add that to 40. Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is 60

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It can't be 60, because 40 is not 75% of 60 (it is actually 67%). Find 1/3 of 40, and add it to 40.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok
