Is pessimistic is a good way to improve your self-esteem?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

being pessimistic is a negative way of looking at things, so no, it's not a good way of improving your self-esteem.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Pessimistic can be. It varies. Some pessimistic see optimist, or the 'jolly' people as shallow and pedantic, and focus more on logistics and statistics rather than emotion. It's all relative to how you look at it.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

no, pessimism is not related to being logic and fact based, it's about having a negative outlook on things. it's not the same thing.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Actually, I'm a very red-pilled pessimistic person and I have great grades in school and an enjoyable social life. Being pessimistic means lowering your expectations and accepting the worst possible outcome, the cold hard truth. Neurology, the study of the human brain, biology and social conditioning - interactions, it's all to complicated to say: "Pessimism only destroys and isn't good."

OpenStudy (aaronq):

fair enough! :)

Pessimists are more realistic. They are less often disappointed, compared to optimists. Self esteem is internal. It doesn't have strong ties with reality, and the outside world. Pessimism does tie in with self-fulfilling prophecies. It can deprive us of the motivation to work for those achievements that would make us feel good inside. How exactly does pessimism benefit self esteem?
