What events led to the breakup of the Soviet Union? Was the end of communism in the Soviet Union positive or negative for the former Soviet republics? Explain your answer.

Well the Warsaw Pact was what kept the Soviet satielaite countries together in response to the NATO. The change of rulers opened Soviet Russia more to the Western world. The end of communism was a positive effect. The breakup of the Soviet Union also led to decreased tension from the Cold War, and many acts such as SALTI and SALTII treaties were created to keep nuclear arms low. Gorbachev was less radical than his predecessors and had friendly terms with Ronald Reagan. The breakup and end of communism in Russia was very positive as it slowly shifted from a communist, or limited economy to a more capitalist, free market. Also, free election and democracy started to develop. Hoped that answered your question!

@hlee0919 so former soviet republics were friendlier to ronald reagan?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

friendly relations between Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan helped lead to friendlier tensions. they used to be very aggresive to one annother. esp in the 1960s during kennedy's presidency. for example: during reagan's presidency they worked together to bring down the Berlin wall. Well, it was more the people. they just went in and broke it down. But gorbachev ordered the soldiers on patrol to not shoot or harm the people and let them do what they want.
