Simplify this expression. 4x(7x2)

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

is that 4x(7x²)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Okay...so when multiplying things like this...it's important to remember...you ADD the exponents...and MULTIPLY the coefficients so 4x^1 times 7x^2 MULTIPLY the coefficients = 4 times 7 ADD the exponents = 2 + 1 Don't forget the x! put all together....your answer is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

28x3?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

correct :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yay :D thank you

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

haha no problem! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7x(9x2) I cant figure this one out either? I just tried that same method but came up with 14x9

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

not quite...I think you're mixing up your numbers 7x(9x²) multiply the coefficients .....7 times 9 add the exponents 1 + 2 don't forget the x! what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

63x3?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

there ya go :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7x(6x) so if I was simplifying this I would get 42x?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

sorry about that....and no not quite.....you forgot to add the exponents....you have 1 + 1....so your answer would be 42x²

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok, thank you :)

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

mmhmm :) anytime :)
