I need understanding what the author is talking about. Can you help me?
Basically, the American society picks their heroes out of ordinary screw-ups. Lance Armstrong is a great example- he made a HUGE error, yet he still is loved by the public
it sounds like American still love him just because he is a winner, if a loser confesses his err, he might not be luck as Armstrong?
what class is this
how about the attitude of the author? judge? neutral?
author's attitude is judgmental and ironic
The author is certainly biased. For example, he brings up only sports stars as heroes when there are many people that do not care for or about sports. He also shows Pete Rose as an example of people being forgiven, but Roes has been banned from the Hall of Fame. He is the only living person on the Hall of Fame ban list, which make him ineligible from even being voted on. So Rose has not been forgiven and his actions are not forgotten.
how about the author's opinion? just as above?
This author also fails to make a good argument because he leaves no room for a viewpoint other than his own. Where is the counter argument? Where is the support for the things he sees as an American trait? Where are the results of any study rather than his personal observations? If he had been implying that we forgive sports starts more easily, I would see his point more strongly supported because that trend can be shown. However, he is not limiting this to sports stars. He generalizes it with the line, "We may all pay lip-service to respecting rules and upholding standards, but Americans secretly adore that curious combination of outlaw and penitent; we seem to find irresistible the sinner who repents more than virtuous soul who never strays from the path," which is an exceptionally broad statement to make based off an incomplete picture of a few people in sports.
OMG, friend, Thank you very much, I have to write a 360 word essay about the author's opinion, consider whether his argument is strong or weak, paraphrase the whole thing. and I have to take his position to re write that passage.
Yes, and you have to do it without really knowing American sports!
yes!!! hahaha... that's why I ask you help
I have 3 more topics, friend, I know nothing !!!
Here are a couple other facts to look at: OJ Simpson was acquitted of murder not because he was a sports hero, but because of one racist police officer. There was one officer that was a known racist. He was at the murder scene, walked in the blood there, and went to OJ's house. This officer had been investigated before for improper conduct and tampering with evidence. Because of that, all the evidence at OJs house was thrown out of court. OJ was acquitted because there is no way to know if the evidence was there because OJ committed a crime or if it was there because that officer planted it. The second time OJ went to court for a big crime, there was no tampering. Now he is in prison. Hero worship did not save him.
@e.mccormick thank you very much. I'll try to write all them out by myself.
