OpenStudy (anonymous):

which side chains are hydrophobic? how do you know if a side chain is hydrophobic or hydrophilic ? picture attached. I know which would be the right answer but im not sure how you could determine it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

phobic from phobia meaning afraid of philic from philia meaning affinity/love for the hydrophobic is the part that's saturated or non-polar

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the question is which of the amino acids have a hydrophobic side chain? (picture attached) and they are all single bonds

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

well I guess you will have to learn a lot since you can't tell right away

OpenStudy (abb0t):

I think there are 6 hydrophobic amino acids.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would i have to memorize them ?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

If you plan on taking upper-division biochemistry, yes.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

It would be very wise to memorize all 20 AND their structures as well as their properties i.e., hydrophobic, hydrophilic, acidic, basic etc if you are a biochemistry-chemistry major and intend to pursue biochemsitry with chemistry emphasis and not the biochemistry-biology emphasis.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so thats the only way of knowing?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

well a few systematic way of learning will help too

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

you can start from knowing the functional groups and their characteristics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much for the document!

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

http://finedrafts.com/articles/100/functional-groups and watching this lecture will help A LOT!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks a bunchhhhhhhhhhh

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Yeah, there's a general formula for amino acids, all you have to do is memorize their side chains.
