In rectangle PQRS, PR = 18x – 25, and QS = x + 825. Find the value of x and the length of each diagonal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = 50; PR = 875; QS = 875 x = 51; PR = 893; QS = 893 x = 50; PR = 437.5; QS = 437.5 x = 25; PR = 850; QS = 850

These are big numbers.....

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

In any rectangle, the diagonals are congruent (or equal in length)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so this means PR = QS 18x – 25 = x + 825

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please give me step by step instructions, Thank you :-)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

all you need to do from here is solve 18x – 25 = x + 825 for x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay! Got it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

tell me what you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

X=5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if possible, write out your steps so I can see where you went wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x+825 = 18x-25 x+825-825=18x-25-825 x=18x-850 -17x=-850 x=-850/-17 x=5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get x=5 What am I doing wrong? My coices are: x = 50; PR = 875; QS = 875 x = 51; PR = 893; QS = 893 x = 50; PR = 437.5; QS = 437.5 x = 25; PR = 850; QS = 850

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-850/-17 is NOT 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought two negetives get you a positive number

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you mistakenly did -85/-17 to get 5 but the real thing you should type in is -850/-17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought I did that x=-850/-17

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

try it again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I forgot to carry the fargin 0...haha the answer is x=50

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yep, x = 50

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

once you know x = 50, use it to find PR and QS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol....Thank you!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
