When evaluating the following expression, which should you do first? 17- 15 + 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you do subtraction first

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

PEMDAS Parenthesis Exponent Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

PEMDAS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well it gives me multiple choice so yea.. A. Add 17 and 5 B. Add 15 and 5 C. Subtract 15 from 17 D. Subtract 15 and 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jhanny are you sure? remember subtraction and addition are interchangable

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

what order of operations are you doing when you have ( 15 + 5)?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

according to pemdas, you'd have to add first @jairo330

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah but in pemdas, addition and subtraction intercgange and so do division and multiplication

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

really? I may have forgotten about that! Interesting.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Jhannybean well thank you anyway! ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I really suck at math! :/

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Then @jairo330 is correct :) you would have to subtract first, then add.

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

I've totally forgotten about PEMDAS it seems...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol it happens to everyone at least once. but thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nah idk i might be wrong lol go with jhannys answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol ok thank you both!

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

when you come up with both addition and subtraction in an equation, you have to go from left to right. this same method applies to multiplication and division.
