which of the following is caused by a bacterium HIV cold herpes pneumonia

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@InYourHead

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you understand the question? Four choices: 1. HIV 2. Common cold 3. Herpes infection 4. Pneumonia Which one is related to bacteria, and not viruses?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cold

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Kill me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Seriously??!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i mean that is the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright. Humor me, by letting me at least explain each of the choices for you. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. This virus attacks and kills our white blood cells. We call this disease AIDS. The common cold is caused by many different kinds of viruses. It affects our respiratory system. Most of the time, it's rhinoviruses, and adenoviruses. Herpes is another viral disease. It causes sores and blisters in our mouths, on our lips, and on our genital areas. Which leave pneumonia. Most of the time, that is caused by bacteria. The bacteria build up inside of our lungs. That's how they make us sick.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay sorry i am kind of confused okay but now i know the answer is pneumonia thanks.:) okay so can u just check my next question what allows bacteria to adheree nutritional sources? pilli?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in the image shown in the file which structure represents the capsule?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would say pili, yes. I know that it helps bacteria attach to other cells. I'm not sure about nutritional sources, but pili look like the only thing that helps them attach to anything at all.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

on the 1 that i have attached file my question about that image ie which structure represents capsule?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The "capsid" is the little prism box that holds the virus's genes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is structure B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. Let me go through ALL the letters with you. And please promise me you'll look at the picture, and memorize them. A is the virus's capsid. It holds the virus's genes. B is the bacterium's cell wall. C is the virus's genetic material. Its genes. D is the bacterial DNA E is the bacterium's cell membrane.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i will! i promise i will write them down beside the pic and memorise them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you from the UK/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no why?do u think that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It was the way you spelled "memorise."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Have you answered all the questions on that part of the worksheet yet? Because if not, I can give you a few facts that will help you answer them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i am right it is structure B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The question was asking for the capsid.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's not B. B is the cell wall of the bacterium. Remember the list?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cause bacteria have capsule and viruses have capsid

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh jesus christ. I'm sorry. I think you were actually right. I confused "capsid" with "capsule."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. So it looks like B is the "capsule." And that means E would be the "cell wall." Not the membrane.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is okay everyone makes mistakes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you want help with any other part of the worksheet that you've shown me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and rhino virus causes common cold right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. I don't wanna throw the answers at you but let me give you a few simple facts that'll help. And yes. When someone has the cold, rhinovirus is usually there. There can be other viruses too.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did u checked my msg?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1. Viruses have a coat, that's made of protein. We call it a "capsid." And inside that coat, they can have DNA, or RNA. 2. The virus in your picture looks like an RNA virus. That means that it has RNA inside of its capsid. 3. Some viruses (like the flu virus) are surrounded by a bubble. A membrane, that's made of lipids. 4. Again, the capsids of viruses are made of proteins. 5. Viruses do not have organelles. They have only three main parts: -- Genes -- Capsid -- Lipid membrane Human cells have organelles, like mitochondria, and ribosomes. Human cells also have cytoplasm. Viruses don't have any of these things.
