Solve |2x -5| > 7.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x > 6 or x < -1 -1 < x < 6 x > 6 and x < -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You just solved your own problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

? lol those are the multiple choice :D @Brenar

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah, makes much more sense. First off, since this is an absolute value inequality you'll have to split it into two inequalities as such: \[-7>2x-5>7\] You have an idea of where to begin?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B..Probably?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you understand how I set up the inequality?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

? not really

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

@Brenar this is wrong, a number cant be greater than 7 and less than -7 at the same time...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x>6 or x<-1

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

This is how we do these |2x-5|>7 so 2x-5>7 2x-5<-7 solve these x>6 or x<-1

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

ie |a-b|>c <===> a-b>c or a-b<-c

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

−7>2x−5>7 ^^^ this makes no sense.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

that implies, by transitivity, that 7<-7

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

you are thinking of |a-b|<C imples -c<a-b<c I think you are getting this confused with the question in the topic.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

l2x-5l>7 +5 +5 _____________ 2x > 12 then divide by 2 and you get x>6

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

nope, regular algebra does not work on absolute values.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

|2x|+5 != |2x+5|

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

or simply plun in -3 to see it is true:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah but i use that for the second solution

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

we showed both solutions, and what you typed is not correct

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

l2x-5l>7 +5 +5 ^^^is not right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mathway.com

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

I don't need a website to tell me that |x|+5 is not the same as |x+5|

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

I know its not:)

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

it would be right if you wrote 2x-5>7 +5 +5

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

but not with the | |

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes with the absolute value sign

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

ok ....

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

then |x|+5 = |x+5|

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

and so |-3|+5 = 8 = 2 = |-3+5|

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

so 2=8

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

what is |-3+5|? what is |-3|+5?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

you see now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and how much math experience do you have?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

im about to graduate

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

with honors with a math degree:)

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

you don't have to trust me, show me where you read it and ill show you how you read it wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

take a calculator and repeat the action. also check mathway.com its a calculator.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

middle school?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

college...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

proud of you. i just logged on today. doesnt matter to me

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

you asked? maybe grow up....im trying to help because you are telling someone how to do something wrong.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

answer these questions and you should be able to understand why what is |-3+5|? what is |-3|+5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahaha says the person with a name they cant even spell correctly. certaintly not graduating with an english major

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

your name is cristina17?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes captain O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know...it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

try mathway.com

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats what i said

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

lol omg what is |-3+5|? what is |-3|+5? now ARE THEY THE SAME???????????????????????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha sorry...

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

think for yourself....don't run to the website:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol mathway.com

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

p.s. solving for x in |x|+5 = |x+5| is not the same thing as saying |x|+5 = |x+5| for all x.....

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

that statement is true if and only if x is 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i got it now. use the multiple choice answers and work backwards l2(7)-5l>7...aka 9>7 l2(-2)-5l>7...aka 9>7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer x > 6 and x < -1 is correct

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is what i had said earlier...i just lacked the explanation
