what is the slope and y intercept of y=5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@johnweldon1993 I am confused, so is the slope 0, and y intercept 5?

OpenStudy (yrelhan4):

yes..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok and for the next problem I am suppose to find the slope and y intercept of x=-7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how would I do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@yrelhan4

OpenStudy (yrelhan4):

you could imagine it like this.. what is slope? like how much the line is inclined.. plot x=-7.. its a vertical line right? what should be the slope? infinity.. as the question is asking for y intercept.. it is 0.. the line does not intersect the y axis, the question of y intercept doesnt arrive.. as a general rule for slope.. for a line ax+by=c.. the slope if -b/a ..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so the slope is infinity because the y intercept is 0?

OpenStudy (yrelhan4):

and pardon me.. slope=-a/b .. and yeah you can imagine it like that. but a more logical approach would be how much it is inclined. |dw:1370962926783:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait so a slope can equal infinite?

OpenStudy (yrelhan4):

theoretically, yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or would it just be undefined?

OpenStudy (yrelhan4):

its how you like to call it. both are fine..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok sweet thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (yrelhan4):

You're welcome.
