I feel that the answer is C.

Joseph Stalin was deeply interested in getting Manchuria from Japan before the war ended. It would be a way to gain extra territory and economic expansion because of the railroads there. Stalin also felt that it would serve as a way to spread the influence of communism.

In the end he got everything he wanted plus some extra islands from Japan.
