your formula is correct but electric field strenght is the magnitude of the electric field.when question ask to electric field you must find both magnitude and direction

It is always assumed in electric field that one is working with positive charge.
In that case, if we place another positive charge in that point, the field will be away from the second charge.
If it is negative, it towards the first positive charge.
Whatever the case, it will be on a straight line.
