5-(9-7)=(5-9)-7 is an example of the associative property. True or False

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the associative property basically says that the order you do operations in does NOT matter.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so this is false

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

The associative property has to do with the order you group parts of an expression with parentheses ( ) these things. It means that the solution will always be the same, no matter how you group the numbers.

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

Try taking out the parentheses in your example. That would be 5-9-7. See if you can tell whether the equation would still be true even if you did the operations in different orders (always doing what's in the parentheses first).
