Can someone please show what the graph of y=-2+tanx would look like?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you have a graphing calculator?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if not, then I recommend downloading geogebra

OpenStudy (softballgirl372015):

i do, but it does not show it the way i am graphing it. do you know how to graph this function by hand?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

to do it by hand, you can start with the graph of tan(x), then shift it down 2 units or you can plot a series of points and connect them with a curve...but you have to keep in mind of the asymptotes

OpenStudy (softballgirl372015):

are you supposed to shift it down two units or half that, therefore moving it down one unit?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no it's 2 units

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-2+tan(x) is the same as tan(x) - 2 so if y = tan(x) then you're essentially saying y - 2 (ie take each y value and subtract 2 from it)

OpenStudy (softballgirl372015):

okay thanks :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yw
