Hey, what's 'www' in websites? Like in www.openstudy.com and all other sites

OpenStudy (anonymous):

www = World Wide Web !!!

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

"www." is a subdomain, it's really not necessary but a lot of hosting providers do it quite a bit now. And it stands for World Wide Web, obviously. A subdomain is like "mail.google.com". "www.google.com". As I said, as far as I know it's optional.

OpenStudy (tyteen4a03):

@dumbsearch2 In a lot of cases, this is optional, but some website has screwy DNS tables (a table which matches domains to computers) that you can't access the site without using the www subdomain.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Me thinks this looks like a computer science question... =P

OpenStudy (tyteen4a03):

@e.mccormick Yes, it would fit there more, but since OpenStudy.com is mentioned... hehe

OpenStudy (ja1):

It is very much unnecessary look at this xD http://wwwdotcom.com/

OpenStudy (ja1):

Like @dumbsearch2 it is simply a subdomain and registrars just stick it on when you order a domain name, I have seen HP use www8.<URL>.com .
