Can someone please explain simply how a dye attaches to a fibre and what type of bond it is. How does turmeric and an azo dye attach to both wool and cotton.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Isn't turmeric a plant?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but tumeric powder is used as a natural dye to dye fabrics. It creates a yellow/brown colour.

http://www.4college.co.uk/a/Cd/fabric.php does this help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not only do the dyes have polar or ionic groups, but fabrics such as cotton and wool also contain polar groups such as –OH (hydroxyl) and –NH (amide) which help the dye attach to the fabric and chemical bonds are formed between the dye and the fabric, which holds the two together. bonds between them may be ionic bonds, hydrogen bonds etc.

is there any difficulty?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

LOL i have already answered it right :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:) oh yes.
