A rectangle is twice as long as it is wide. If its area is 50 sq. yd., find the length.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

You know that area = Length times Width You know Length = 2 times Width so L = 2W So putting everything in 50 = L x W *replacing L with 2W like we found 50 = 2W x W 50 = 2W² So divide both sides by 2 here...what do you have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So basically we divide it by two

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

At this point you divide 50 = 2W² by 2 yes After that what will you have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

25 right?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Right 50 = 2W² --------- 2 2 W² = 25 so what number squared = 25?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 ?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Right....this means W = 5 Width = 5 So now that you know width...and you know Length = 2 times the width....what does the length equal...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Perfect...so we have Length = 10 and Width = 5....lets check if this is correct... Area = Length x Width 50 = 10 x 5 is this a correct statement?
